Lyrics
Donald, Who’s Keeping Score?[Verse 1]
Donald came marching through the yard
With a look I knew meant trouble.
Tail straight out, chest puffed up,
Mad enough for double.
I said, “What happened, Donald?”
He pointed toward next door.
“That dog took my tennis ball.
That makes number four.”
I said, “Number four?”
He said, “Yep.
One ball.
Two bones.
And Tuesday he sniffed my bowl.”
I said, “Donald, are you keeping score?”
He said,
“Somebody’s gotta know.”
[Chorus]
Who’s keeping score, Donald?
Who owes who today?
How long you gonna carry
Every wrong along the way?
Forgiveness doesn’t say
What somebody did was right.
It says,
“I won’t keep dragging this
Into every brand-new night.”
You can remember.
You can learn.
You can still know what is true.
But when Jesus forgives the debt—
He teaches us
to forgive one too.
[Verse 2]
I said, “Boy, you gotta forgive him.
You can’t live keeping track.”
Donald looked me dead in the eye.
“Okay, Dad.
Let’s talk about that.”
“You still mention that old couch
I chewed when I was young.”
“That couch cost eight hundred dollars!”
Donald smiled.
“And here we go, son.”
I said, “Don’t call me son.”
He said,
“See?
Now we got two things
on your list.”
I crossed my arms.
Donald sat there grinning.
“Good talk, Dad.”
[Chorus]
Who’s keeping score, Donald?
Who owes who today?
How long you gonna carry
Every wrong along the way?
Forgiveness doesn’t say
What somebody did was right.
It says,
“I won’t keep dragging this
Into every brand-new night.”
You can remember.
You can learn.
You can still know what is true.
But when Jesus forgives the debt—
He teaches us
to forgive one too.
[Bridge]
Some hurts are little.
Some hurts go deep.
Some take more than one prayer
Before your heart finds peace.
Forgiving ain’t forgetting.
It doesn’t make wrong right.
It means that old hurt
doesn’t get to own
the rest of your life.
Jesus knew what we had done.
Still grace was what He chose.
And forgiven people learn
there comes a time—
To quit keeping score.
[Verse 3]
Next morning that neighbor dog
Came wandering through the gate.
Donald saw him coming.
I thought,
“Well…here we go. Just wait.”
The dog dropped Donald’s tennis ball
Right there beside his feet.
Donald looked at him.
Looked at me.
Then pushed it back with his feet.
I said, “Donald…
what are you doing?”
He said,
“Starting over.”
Then paused.
“But I’m still keeping my good bone
in the house.”
I said, “Fair enough.”
He nodded.
“Forgiveness ain’t stupidity, Dad.”
…Okay.
The dog had a point.
[Final Chorus]
No more keeping score, Donald.
No carrying yesterday.
We can tell the truth about the hurt
And still choose a better way.
Forgiveness doesn’t make us weak.
Grace takes strength to give.
Jesus didn’t free our hearts
So yesterday could tell us how to live.
Get right in your heart.
Do right with what you know.
Forgiven people
learn to forgive—
And quit keeping score.
[Outro — spoken]
I said, “Donald, I think you finally got it.”
He said, “Yep.”
“So we’re even?”
Donald thought about it.
“Well…
you still owe me for getting me fixed.”
“DONALD!”
“Just checking your forgiveness, Dad.”
