Lyrics
Canberra — You’ve Been Looking at Her Wrong[Intro — Spoken]
I wrote a song not long ago,
“Canberra Made Me Cry Today”...
But then I read a little story
That made me look at Canberra
In a completely different way.
[Verse 1]
An old historian told me,
“Mate, there's something you should know,
The name Canberra has a meaning
From a very long time ago.”
John Gale wrote down the story,
Way back in twenty-seven,
And when I read what Canberra meant,
Well... stone the bloody crows in heaven!
[Chorus]
Oh Canberra, Canberra,
I've been looking at you wrong,
I've driven through your streets for years,
I've even written you a song.
But Ainslie and Black Mountain,
Standing proudly side by side—
They say our nation's capital
Has cleavage open wide!
[Verse 2]
The story says the mountains
Were compared to women's breasts,
And Canberra lay between them—
Well, I'll let you guess the rest.
John Gale called it poetry,
A mother city grand,
A name born from the contours
Of this ancient, rolling land.
[Chorus]
Oh Canberra, Canberra,
I've been looking at you wrong,
Those two old hills were sitting there
And I never caught on!
From Ainslie to Black Mountain,
Now I'll never see the same—
Who knew our nation's capital
Had curves built in its name?
[Verse 3]
Then someone mapped the body out—
Now this gets rather silly:
City Hill's the belly button
Right there in the middle of the city.
One foot down in BON-igh-th’n
The other near Trahlee,
And half the Inner North, they say,
Is where the cleavage ought to be!
[Bridge — Spoken, Cheeky]
Imagine the new tourism ads...
“Come to Canberra — naturally well-endowed!”
Two mountains on a T-shirt,
A necklace hanging low...
And underneath, in little letters:
“You've been looking at Canberra wrong!”
[Final Chorus]
Oh Canberra, Canberra,
You made me cry one day,
But now you've made me laugh again
In your peculiar way.
From Parliament to Ainslie,
Black Mountain standing strong—
Canberra made me cry one day...
But I've been looking at her wrong!
[Outro — Spoken]
And next time I drive into Canberra...
I'll keep my eyes on the road.
[MUSIC CONTINUES STRONG THAN FADE]
