The Rest of Your Life

Lyrics

The Rest of Your Life
[Intro]
Jesus, every victory belongs to You. If my story helps somebody make it through, Let them see You.
[Verse 1]
Food was my first addiction… names changed, pattern did not. I kept reaching for another thing To give me what it never brought. Meth and smoke and bottles, Always hungry, never full. Every promise that I’d quit Lost another round of tug-of-war.
Then a cold garage became the place I finally quit pretending. “Jesus, help me” wasn’t much— But it was my beginning. You met me in the wreckage, Where my own strength gave way. I asked You for a way out. You taught me how to stay.
[Pre-Chorus]
Now when somebody asks me How I made it through that night, I point beyond the man I am To the One who gave me life.
[Chorus]
Today is the first day of the rest of your life! Yesterday had its say—it won’t get tonight. Take a breath, take a hand, take a step toward the light. You don’t have to see the whole road to start walking it right. Jesus gets the glory—I’m living proof of grace. He met me where I was; He didn’t leave me in that place. Your worst day doesn’t get to write the final line. Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
[Verse 2]
Nearly a hundred fifty pounds, And years of chains behind me. But a number on a scale Could never say what You untied in me. You’re teaching me to listen, Let an angry answer wait. To say, “I’m wrong,” and mean it, Before pride can shut the gate.
There’s a family worth my effort, There are promises to keep. Love is showing up tomorrow, Not a speech that sounds so deep. I still have things to work on, Still have places left to grow. But I can face the man in the mirror And let You lead him home.
[Verse 3]
Now I walk through jailhouse doors And look a brother in the eyes. Tell him what You did for me, Let him know hope’s still alive. I’ve stood beside those boys And watched their courage start to grow. Been baptized by a praying friend, Then helped two boys down in the water go.
These hands that held my habits Have held pages, prayers, and songs. I’ve seen a story reach a heart That thought it didn’t belong. Every life that finds some courage, Every seed that starts to grow— Jesus, You deserve the glory. You’re the reason that I go.
[Bridge]
Maybe you’ve never touched a bottle. Maybe grief has knocked you down. Maybe you’re raising kids alone Or watching work leave town. Maybe you got up this morning And just getting dressed was hard. That step still counts. There’s courage in that heart.
You don’t have to live my story. You’ve got chapters of your own. Let somebody walk beside you; You weren’t meant to fight alone. I can’t promise easy mornings. I still have hard ones too. But Jesus met me at my lowest— There is room here for you.
[Build]
I’ve got breath left in my body. I’ve got love left I can give. By the grace that brought me this far, I’ve got life left I can live!
[Guitar Solo]
Today is the first day of the rest of your life! Yesterday had its say—it won’t get tonight. Take a breath, take a hand, take a step toward the light. You don’t have to see the whole road to start walking it right. Jesus gets the glory—I’m living proof of grace. He met me where I was; He didn’t leave me in that place. Your worst day doesn’t get to write the final line. Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
[Outro]
Get right. Do right. Let the next step tell the story. When they ask how I got here, Jesus gets the glory.
The sun came up. So did I. Thank You, Jesus, For the rest of my life.
