Leave a Legacy
While we’re busy growing up and living our lives
we give little thought to how we’re seen in their eyes
Focused on achieving goals and collecting things
hoping for great success and the joy that it brings
We tell ourselves,
pay no attention to what others may think
They’ll shoot us down just to watch us sink
Who needs them anyhow, they’re just in the way
and then we continue to go on with our day
I start to wonder now – what’s it all mean
It’s all melting away like a popsicle dream
The joy in my life is extracted from things
like houses and cars and expensive rings
While it was fun, it does not sustain
and does very little to ease all the pain
The pain of moving on, from losing you
all my loved ones and my little dog too
As I start to reflect upon a wiseman’s words
words of his wisdom as if talking to his herds
He said
It matters not how you leave this life
It matters most how you leave this place
that is to say
It matters not how you leave this life
death is simple, holding on is full of strife
It matters most how you leave this place
remembered by your acts of kindness and grace
But we continue to focus on all the things we want
the more we get the more we seek, a continuous hunt
Now we’re sittin’ here surrounded by all this stuff
It means so little now, walking away wouldn’t be that tough
Wish I’d collected more than material things
the thought of moving on now, really kinda stings
How will we leave here and what will they say
did we work with the people or go our own way
the things they’ll say about us will be written in stone
So make sure they’ll recall all the love that we’ve sown
and so I ask you to remember this
It matters not how you leave this life
It matters most how you leave this place
and this
this is all I have to say
How are you going to leave this place
and what kind of gifts will you leave in that space
what kind of gifts
will you leave in this space
we give little thought to how we’re seen in their eyes
Focused on achieving goals and collecting things
hoping for great success and the joy that it brings
We tell ourselves,
pay no attention to what others may think
They’ll shoot us down just to watch us sink
Who needs them anyhow, they’re just in the way
and then we continue to go on with our day
