Lyrics
A Song For My FatherFather, I hope you are happy in heaven.
You sure went through hell on earth.
Please prepare a room for me in heaven.
I will be there to see you, if I can prove my worth.
My thoughts often drift back, to when I was a kid.
I feel blessed I didn’t do, what my Father did.
He let alcohol completely, control his life,
As if he had forgotten, his two kids and wife.
I was told, sober, he was a gentle man,
He would start drinking, and turn mean.
He worked and did, as good as he could do.
After work he’d drink, fight and cause a scene.
I never got to, know my Father.
I can barely remember him.
He past, when I was only three.
My brother was eight, and closer to him.
The sight of him, in the coffin,
Is the scene, I remember most.
All the family, was there and crying.
I just hung on to Momma, feeling sad and lost.
Father, I hope you are happy in heaven.
You sure went through hell on earth.
Please prepare a room for me in heaven.
I will be there to see you, if I can prove my worth.
I was told my Father, was wounded in the war.
He came home a changed man,
More somber, and not as happy as before.
The more I think of it, the more I understand.
He was fighting the pain, in his body and mind.
He tried to hide it, then the demons would attack.
For the pain, he drank, for the demons, he’d fight.
I wish I was older then, to have his back.
He was in a VA hospital, when the demons attacked.
He had a bout with the D Ts, it made him go mad.
He jumped out a widow to escape, and ran to the gate.
A guard tried to stop him, and hit him with all he had.
The army called it suicide, but I now know the truth.
I would do anything to fight it, if I had the proof.
I guess I will have to let it go, it has been far too long.
The only thing I can do about it, is write his song.
Father, I hope you are happy in heaven.
You sure went through hell on earth.
Please prepare a room for me in heaven.
I will be there to see you, if I can prove my worth.
I am sorry, this is the best I can do.
This is the story I know, this song is for you.
