Broken Down on a Rainy Road

The old Ford truck broke down in the rain,
On my way to the prison, feeling all the pain,
Grandma was waiting, counting the day,
But the engine just sighed, had nothing to say.
Raindrops were falling, dancing on steel,
Stuck by the roadside, turning the wheel,
Called up the tow truck, but nothing seemed right,
Knew I'd be stuck there well into the night.
Just as I waited, my phone gave a ring,
News about Grandma—it started to sting,
Heard her old dog had taken his leave,
Turned out to be the saddest reprieve.
Memories of Grandma, her laugh and her grace,
All came flooding in, I could see her face,
That dog was her heart, her comfort inside,
I wished I could soften the pain she'd confide.
Tried calling the prison, explained my plight,
Truck broke down, dog crossed over that night,
Hoped they’d understand, give her the love,
Tell her I'm coming, though the skies are rough.
Just as I waited, my phone gave a ring,
News about Grandma—it started to sting,
Heard her old dog had taken his leave,
Turned out to be the saddest reprieve.
